Virgin Australia announced a new service from Perth to Abu Dhabi today, which will commence serving West Australian business and leisure travellers on June 9th, 2017.
In a move that coincides with the change in their SYD-AUH services with codeshare partner Etihad, the airline will now utilise their A330 aircraft on the PER-AUH route. (This will take a portion of their A330 fleet away from the popular SYD-PER & MEL-PER routes, reducing the majority of those back to B737's)
This is a huge boost for Perth Airport, as it's the first new International service from a domestic airline in many years. Perhaps this could be seen as a move to gain ground in the west, before the "highly anticipated" (but not confirmed) PER-LHR route with Qantas' incoming B787 Dreamliners.
